They Poured Fire on us from the Sky
Book Summary
Benson, Alepho, and Benjamin were born into the Dinka tribe. They grew up farming and tending to their cattle. They learned the danger of being alone with the possible attacks of lions, pythons, and hyenas. Even at a young age they had learned to spook predators and keep their cattle safe.
One night they were alarmed by gunshots and squealing animals. The boys knew that it was time to escape their home village. They fled out into the night and the cover of the bush. It was not long before they were all split up in different directions. Many times along their journey they encountered many dangers including Predators, gunmen, and famine. They would go for many days without food or water but they stayed strong and didn’t give up on their hopes.
After many days and nights, they all met up again at a refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya. Most of them were suffering injuries from famine, disease, and chiggers. At the camp they were give free food and shelter. However they were not satisfied with the rations of food as well as the dry corn that made them sick. Even though they had gone through these tough times, they persevered knowing they would be able to go to America. They read many books, articles, and stories to get to know what living in America was like.
Finally came the day when they got the news that they would be going to America in one week. As days past, studying frequently and nervously waiting for the arrival of the plane that would take the boys to the promised land. The plane came and the boys were off. At the end of their plane journey the boys were left in San Diego. After many learning experiences including how to use the restroom and soda machine, the boys are now proud citizens of the United States of America.
